Google Photos Unveils AI-Powered Ask Photos Feature for Enhanced Image Search Experience
- Sep-08-2024
Recent announcements from the tech giant reveal a series of enhancements coming to Google Photos, notably a new artificial intelligence feature. This will introduce users to a function called Ask Photos, enabling them to locate particular images through conversational queries addressed to the Gemini system. In addition, the app will roll out a feature for descriptive queries, allowing users to input more detailed search terms directly in the native search bar. Currently, Ask Photos is only accessible in an early access phase.
The company's blog post introduced the innovative Ask Photos feature, acknowledging its experimental nature as part of Google Labs. Currently, access is limited and available exclusively to a select group of users within the United States.
Ask Photos will provide a distinct interface within the Google Photos application. Users can find this by tapping a search icon located at the bottom right corner of the app. Inside this full-screen interface, users will be able to interact with Gemini in a user-friendly manner, posing queries in everyday language.
For example, one might request to see "my pictures from Shaurya's birthday party," and Gemini is designed to comprehend and contextualize the request to display relevant images. Users will also have the option to ask Gemini for suggestions of images to share on different social media platforms.
With a strong emphasis on user privacy and data security, the company has reassured users that their data within Google Photos will not be utilized for advertising purposes. While human reviewers may assess search queries made through Ask Photos to enhance the functionality, this review process will only occur after user accounts are disconnected from the platform.
Moreover, Google emphasized that no human review will take place regarding the answers produced by Ask Photos, encompassing the photos and videos displayed. In addition to Ask Photos, all users will benefit from improvements to the app's search experience. The newly introduced descriptive queries feature allows users to formulate search terms in a more natural language style, providing a richer context for their searches. This enhancement is currently being deployed in English for all users on both Android and iOS devices.
